FrontPage 2002 FAQ
What is Microsoft ®
FrontPage™?
FrontPage is an easy-to-use Web
development and publishing tool that allows you to create professional Web pages
without having any real knowledge of HTML code.
What enhancements have been made to
FrontPage 2002 that were not available with FrontPage
2000?
Microsoft has made a number of
enhancements to FrontPage, including the following:
·
Easier
access to the tools you need
-- A new integrated folder list and navigation pane allow you to set up and
change links, banners, and other navigation while editing pages. Page tabs allow
you to flip between multiple pages without cluttering the desktop. The new task
pane provides quick access to frequently used commands and
files.
·
Image
Library --
Choose from a range of layouts to create a gallery
for your photos or images. FrontPage automatically builds thumbnails; you need
only resize images and add captions and
descriptions.
·
AutoShapes,
drop shadows, WordArt, and callouts
-- These familiar tools are as easy to use in FrontPage as they are in Microsoft
Word and Microsoft PowerPoint®.
You can even import and use shapes created in other Office programs. (You must
have Microsoft Office XP installed on your computer in order to use these
features.)
·
Automatic
Web content
-- Visitors can gain access to timely MSNBC headlines and weather, Microsoft
Money Central™ stock-ticker lookups, Microsoft Expedia maps, and MSN®
search.
·
HTML,
ASP, and XML source-code preservation capabilities
-- Import code created in a text editor or other HTML editing tool without
rearranging or changing it. FrontPage 2002 allows you to transform HTML code to
be XML-compliant with a single command.
·
Custom
Link Bars
-- Link to e-mail addresses, network shares, or pages on or off your site.
·
Usage
Analysis Reports
– This basic site data analysis software can tell you which pages are getting
the most hits and how visitors arrived at your site. You can also save reports
in Microsoft Excel or HTML format for further analysis. (This feature is not
intended to replace the Web Trends site tracking tools already provided with
WEBCOAST.NET's True Advantage accounts.)
·
New
Publishing dialog box
-- Drag files and folders between source and destination Webs for faster
publishing.
·
Database
Interface Wizard
– This feature makes connecting forms to a database a snap and allows authorized
users to edit or query databases through a Web-based form. In addition, you can
collect data from online forms and deliver it to a text file, e-mail address, or
database such as Microsoft Access.
Can I host a Share point™ site from
my Web site?
No, you cannot. Due to the unique
security requirements of a shared hosting platform, WEBCOAST.NET does not allow
Share point sites on its shared servers. As a result, customers will not
be able to use the features of FrontPage 2002 that allow integration with
Share point. In addition, WEBCOAST.NET Technical Support is unable to troubleshoot
or resolve issues related to Share point.
Can I use the Microsoft
bCentral™
Commerce Manager on my site?
Because
bCentral is an application hosted by Microsoft, WEBCOAST.NET cannot support the use
of the bCentral service. However, we do offer a suite of e-commerce services
appealing to a wide array of business needs. For more information on
WEBCOAST.NET's e-commerce offerings, contact your WEBCOAST.NET sales consultant.
Does my
site have to be hosted on a Windows server in order to use
FrontPage?
You can
host your FrontPage site on WEBCOAST.NET's Linux or Windows hosting platforms. Both
support the use of FrontPage and FrontPage Server Extensions.
What do I
need in order to start using FrontPage 2002?
You only
need two things in order to get started with FrontPage
2002:
·
FrontPage
client software – You
can purchase this software from a software dealer and install it on your
computer or workstation. FrontPage 2002 is part of the Office XP suite of
products.
·
FrontPage
Server Extensions – These
are available via your WEBCOAST.NET administration page.
What are
FrontPage Server Extensions?
FrontPage
Server Extensions are server-side applications that enable you to incorporate
the following advanced features without having to write the complex server-side
programs typically required.
- Collaborate
simultaneously with other users on the same Web site.
- Create
a Web page directly on a Web server.
- Save
directly to a Web server when using Office programs.
·
Include
these FrontPage components on your sites: link bars, top-ten lists, form
handlers, discussions, full text searches, hit counters, and
categories.
FrontPage
Extensions must be installed on your server in order for the aforementioned
features to function properly on your FrontPage Web site.
How do I
get FrontPage Extensions?
You can
install or re-install FrontPage Extensions on your Web server from your
WEBCOAST.NET administration page
Can I
use FrontPage 98 or FrontPage 2000 if I have FrontPage 2002 Extensions installed
on my server?
Yes, you
can. Microsoft has created FrontPage 2002 Extensions to be backward-compatible
with earlier versions of FrontPage.
